Overview

This project investigates how borders alter otherwise plausible metropolitan travel. It treats a boundary as measurable friction that can change route choice, job access, labor-market integration, and the demand placed on transport systems.

Core questions

  • How much accessibility is lost when a daily trip crosses an administrative boundary?
  • Which workers and destinations are most exposed to border-related delay or uncertainty?
  • How do boundaries change observed commuting patterns relative to network opportunity?
  • What do those differences imply for transport planning and regional integration?

Method

The analysis combines routing, census, mobility, and geographic data. Observed movement and modeled accessibility remain separate so that border friction can be quantified without treating one source as complete ground truth.
